I have seen books transform students in the classroom. Whether it opens their minds to new ideas, or puts them in someone else's shoes, books are the heart and soul of my classroom.
In my classroom, we are always reading and researching to become more inventive and creative thinkers. However, we do not just use books for literature and writing. I have also incorporated literature into subjects such as math and science. By weaving these texts across all subjects, students begin to see the importance of reading and how it can truly alter our lives.
One item that will be purchased for my classroom is a class library set that focuses on culture. As a public school teacher in East Los Angeles, I have seen first hand the abundance of culture and diversity that walks into my classroom every day. The books we will receive with your donations will teach students to embrace their own culture as well as learn about the cultures of their peers. Cultural texts in my classroom will open students' eyes and hearts, and hopefully teach love and tolerance in our seemingly chaotic world.
