Transitioning to the world of work after high school is the goal of most high school students. Historically, students with special needs, or disabilities encounter a broad range of barriers. This year, I am organizing a recycling service-learning project that will address a wide range of skills needed for employment. By learning through doing, students will increase their awareness of community and service as well as actively participate in creating their employment goals. Students will have the opportunity to try out a variety of roles such as: recycling handlers/tallyers, promoters, artists/designers, writers, technology gurus, and liaisons to faculty. The color printer will allow students to design and print colorful promotional posters while the aprons and name badges will provide a professional element found at many job sites. The safety glasses, and gloves are necessary for hygiene and safety, the clipboards will allow students to collect data and record it anywhere on campus and then record their information on their Chromebooks, and the clear trash bags will be used in the recycle bins for collection. These materials will provide me with the tools necessary to create a service-learning project that will provide continuous opportunities for my students with disabilities to gain key employability skills that employers expect in their employees.
