I'm a kindergarten teacher at a high poverty school in Kailua-Kona. Regardless of the struggles some of my students come from, all of them come to school with enthusiasm to learn. I love their willingness to work hard and respect their learning environment. My classroom is not very big and I've have a great basis for the necessities of desks, books, etc. but there is one area I feel is lacking and something I'd love to bring back into the classroom......Imaginative Play. I feel it's very important to include free choice play to build social skills. Having imaginative play areas can also enhance real life, hands-on learning. My belief is to have a good balance of a variety of teaching styles to meet the various learning styles of each child. I would love to connect math and reading skills in centers based around themed learning centers such as market, kitchen, Dr's. Office, library and sand and water play.
