This project is a little unique in the way of the typical school supplies. My students see math and reading as a school subject but, I want to show them they are all over. A way to my students' mind can definitely be through their stomachs. The connections we can make with measurements and adding are just a few topics I plan to teach through cooking with the griddle, hot plate and toaster ovens.
I also plan to use the supplies as great connections to our reading. One of my favorite activities is celebrating Dr. Seusses' birthday with green eggs and ham. How about Irish Potatoes, potato latkes, and Christmas cookies are just a few items I love to make with my students each year. All these recipes have such great learning connected with just the wonderful food like: cultural experiences, working together, following directions, measurement, reading, and just fun, fun, fun!
These project will improve my classroom in helping my students to love learning. My students will love to cook and connect what we just read or what we just did in math to real life experiences. The students will be able to actually apply the skills taught to real life and that is a great learning experience.
