By having immediate access to these Dictionary and Thesaurus reference materials, my students will become better all-around writers, speakers and vocabulary-users.
Strengthening the use of the English language is a skill that requires the constant reinforcement of the meanings (both literal and figurative) of words, as well as being able to expand their vocabulary through exposure to synonyms and antonyms.
When there is limited access to dictionaries/thesauruses due to a shortage of funds (such as we are currently facing in the education field), students are the ones who suffer. We currently have 15 dictionaries and 2 thesauruses for a class of 27 students. To make matters worse, these materials are over 15 years old; the majority torn and tattered with missing pages, covers, etc.
With this new class set of dictionaries/thesauruses, each child will be able to have their "own" copy on their desk to access on demand.
