The theme of my senior literature course this year is resistance and resilience, and as we enter a new unit, on personal narratives, I want to be able to give each of my students a copy of Night to keep for themselves. Many of them do not have books at home, and have a hard time investing in a text they can't keep to mull over, that they can't annotate, that is falling apart. Having their own copies of the text helps students invest in their own learning and helps them hold themselves accountable to their work. I want them to build strong academic habits, so that they can be successful and persistent when they encounter challenging work in college and life beyond. Identity is one of the central ideas of this text, and I hope, that as we read (four books this year!) my students will add the conception of themselves as skilled (and passionate) readers to their complex and beautiful identities.
