Kindergarten is such an important year in a child’s life. It is here that they begin the process of becoming life-long learners. However, in order to become a life-long learner students need to feel successful in the classroom as well as gain a love for learning. Success will happen by placing students in an environment that nurtures both their academic development as well as their social emotional development.
To quote Aristotle-"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all". Therefore, with the grant money, I would like to purchase materials to help teach Mindful Awareness and empathy. I began teaching mindful awareness in my classroom last school year, and after a very short amount of time, I was witness to its success. It gives students strategies for self-regulating which, ultimately allows them calm their body and mind, choose mindful behavior over unmindful behavior and allows them to be reflective rather than reactive. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting, researching and reading up on ways to better support my students as a whole. In the end, I’ve realized that idea is quite simple. When you go back and look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs we know that our students need to be satisfied on a Social Emotional level before they are ready to learn. However, in school, we spend the majority of the time focusing on academics and have little time to explicitly help foster social/emotional development. I truly believe that in order for my students to be more successful in the classroom and in order to create lifelong learners I need to make sure I’m creating a teaching environment that grows the Whole Child.
