In order to help empower my students, I need to provide an environment that allows them to learn in ways that work best for them. One way to do this is through providing different types of seating options, like exercise balls and lounge chairs. The exercise balls will allow my students with ADD/ADHD or those who have excessive amounts of energy to learn while moving without distracting those around them. Since my classroom currently uses traditional desks, I would need to purchase tables that can be adjusted to meet different heights so that the students could use the exercise balls as chairs. The tables would also allow for collaborative learning. I have also requested lap desks and a lounge chair so that students may sit in lounge type chairs and do their work. This would be especially useful for my creative writing students who tend to be more creative while sitting in comfortable, home like environments. The lap desks will enable them to have a stable work table while working in the lounge chair. I already have one lounge chair in my classroom, which my creative writing students flock to when they are looking to read or work on a story.
I want to take something as simple as a chair to empower my students and help them be their best. But thats not always possible for students who have the urge to move or exhibit what the education world has labeled "bad behaviors." I want to use this furniture to help them refocus their energies into constructive behaviors.
Help me create a flexible classroom for all of my diverse learners.
