My students use the carpet as a meeting place every single day. We discuss our daily schedule, share personal experiences, learn to navigate a calendar, work in partners and teams, read to one another, share writing, and the list goes on and on.
It serves as the classroom water cooler where students meet and form relationships. The rug is a soft meeting space to take brain breaks or work with extra elbow room when you need a little time or space to yourself. It is a universal tool where we meet as equals to share ideas and help one another grow.
A classroom rug is a vital component to meeting, transitioning, and most importantly learning. It is the hub of our busy first grade Metropolis and of the utmost necessity to our classroom.
