Since today’s young readers tend to be female, there are a plethora of novels available with female protagonists. As for the boys, there seem to be a lot of science fiction novels with male protagonists, but other genres seem to be overwhelmingly represented by female protagonists. It is important to me to provide multiple perspectives in my classroom, and during our first novel study I’d like to add a novel from a male protagonist to the list of choices. Both boys and girls would have the opportunity to select the novel, and it would make our selections for reading more versatile.
