The goal of my project is to diversify my classroom library. I want to do a better job of providing varied and inclusive books for the two activities that most benefit my young readers; my daily read alouds and my second graders' daily independent reading.
My hope is to widen my second graders' world through diverse books. Some of these titles will be the focus of my read alouds, when I'll model the skills they need to be strong readers and we'll interact with the texts through conversations, role-plays, and writing. Other titles will be the focus of my students' independent reading, when they'll settle in to a quiet corner to practice the skills I've modeled for them. Having a treasure trove of wonderful books is key to the success of both read alouds and independent reading, and by extension the success of my young readers.
