My students need sets of books (especially graphic novels). Graphic novels, especially, help struggling readers comprehend what they are reading. They don't have to focus on making the pictures in their head because the pictures are on the page in front of them.
Every year I teach 8th graders that cannot comprehend literature. Once I get a good, interesting, non childish graphic novel in their hands, they can't get enough! I had on student last year put down "War Brothers," stare at me in awe, and exclaim, "That was the best book I have ever read!" At least five other kids in that one class read "War Brothers" and more wanted to. I just didn't have enough copies or time for them to finish reading it. I am hoping additional copies will eliminate this issue.
