Research shows that small children learn by doing. Using hands on manipulatives is proven to help children improve in reading, writing and spelling. I will utilize the easel in many ways. First, the easel will hold shared reading books where the children will be able to read age appropriate text to aide in fluency and comprehension.
The easel will also be used as a teaching tool to guide the students in writing and spelling. The student magnetic whiteboards and magnetic letters will be used for hands on practice for spelling and phonics patterns.
It is a known fact that first grade is the grade where the basic skills are taught and mastered. With the help of these teaching tools students will have a chance to practice using hands on materials.
