Recently, during one of our math lessons, I made the decision to allow my students to work on the floor on blankets, with pillows and stuffed animals. While some might see this as something that would distract the students from learning, what we really discovered was that because they were comfortable, they were more willing to learn.
They were relaxed, felt safe and calm, and we had an AMAZING lesson. I’ve known about flexible seating for years, and just always thought it wouldn’t be possible because of how expensive the supplies can get. My hope with this project is that next year I’ll be able to provide a comfortable learning environment for my fourth and fifth grade math/science students, where they can learn in a place that’s welcoming, safe, and comfy.
