We Beat the Street and The Pact will create transformational change in my classroom. We Beat the Street and The Pact are autobiographies (the second for older students) about three doctors from Newark, New Jersey who overcome incredible obstacles to become successful doctors. Both books mirror the unique cultural experiences and perspectives of my students, who are mostly urban city teenagers.
With We Beat the Street and The Pact students will be able to connect the experiences of the three doctors to their own lives. Furthermore, while my 8th grade students will be reading the more rigorous version (The Pact), all my students will learn common themes from the stories of the three doctors. Students learn best when we teach in ways that value their identity and harness and affirm the power of the student voice. We Beat the Street and The Pact will empower my students to become leaders.
