For over a year Covid impacted my ability to facilitate hands on real life application activities that engage and extend student learning. With 75% of my students engaging in distance learning, providing materials that supported a conceptual model of engagement was challenging. With students back in the classroom it is important to create opportunities that make learning meaningful and fun. Meaningful learning opportunities that empower student to reflect on the influence of culture in history help students prepare for their present and future impact. My project is directly tied to Nevada history, and specifically the past and present story of the Native Paiute tribe for which I serve. Our learning is embedded in the Social Studies standards regarding social justice (SS.4.15 & SS.4.16), respectful engagement with diverse people (SS.4.17 & SS.4.18) and diverse contributions from racial and ethnic backgrounds (SS.4.19). I integrate opportunities for students to read (RI standards 1- 3 & 6) from multiple sources to build knowledge and understanding of the content and then write about their learning in the form of reports, legends, and summaries (Writing standards 2, 4, 7, 8 & 9). To round out the experience students talk about their learning and share it with parents (SL standards 1 and 4). As support for their learning, students will create a traditional Native drum and drum stick, and or a dream catcher/medicine pouch of which they will read, write and discuss.
