My second grade students come to me in a range of academic abilities ranging from low functioning special education students, all the way to reading at a sixth grade level. They also come to me with a wide range of behavioral levels.
My second graders need the ability to find the perfect seating to allow them to focus, while still having the ability to wiggle around as young children often do. I often have several special education students, students on the Autistic Spectrum, AD(H)D children, and so on in my classroom any given year. My class size averages 30 students. With the range of abilities, attention spans, and sheer number of students, this flexible seating will allow my students the opportunity to find what they need at that given time to focus and complete the task at hand.
The stability balls will allow my bouncy kids to bounce while working. The resistance bands will allow those who like to move their feet a lot a focused place to bounce their feet. And, the wobble chairs will allow those who do not find traditional chairs comfortable, a place to safely wobble side to side while working at their tables. The addition of the flexible seating to our classroom will help tremendously! It will channel the pent up energy into a safe and appropriate target - varied seats!
My students, and I, will benefit greatly from flexible seating. We will be able to focus on what needs to be completed, and not that everyone has the same seat, at the same table. We will be able to concentrate on what is actually important - learning!
