I am a first year Chemistry teacher and I have some of the most talented, hard-working students in our school. Many of them are not in the position to afford a scientific calculator. To give them the best opportunity to succeed not only in our Chemistry class, but in the health related fields they are hoping to pursue, we need to master the basics of chemical calculations which will inevitably necessitate access to the tools to solve such problems. Providing students with calculators will enable them to succeed not only at the high school level, but will also prepare them for life beyond the classroom and give them access to passing rigorous exams such as the ACT, future AP exams and college entrance exams.
