My students are regularly the students that come to school without. They are the students who "lost" their pencils and highlighters and didn't get a new backpack, or a fancy binder to start the school year. They are also the students who don't have sufficient access to reading materials, so as a result they don't always read at grade level.
This project means my students won't have to go without. The backpacks, binders, and notebooks will help keep them organized without awkwardly carrying a stack of papers, books and pencils from class to class. Our school does not allow traditional backpacks in the classroom, but instead allows the cinch bags to be carried to and from each class. Parents aren't usually aware of this rule and if they have a backpack, it is usually not allowed. Middle school is the point in a students life that organizational skills become critical. The binders will be used to ensure the students will have just a little more help being organized.
The books, chairs and rug will be used to create a reading corner in our classroom that will give them access to reading materials. The variety of reading materials will help expand their vocabulary, and improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
