By having access to base 10 blocks, students can practice their skills and show their conceptual understanding through visuals that they can actually manipulate with their hands. All students will have access to manipulatives regardless of their learning plan. Place value understanding is crucial for all of the operations. In fifth grade, the ability to decompose numbers and understand place value is crucial to meeting grade level standards. If students can understand numbers and concepts, they can calculate using any of the operations with ease. By having access to materials like base 10 blocks, they can have help with manipulating the numbers by having a visual to go along with their learning.
