Each day, students arrive to school in various states of emotion. Many students come to us well fed, well rested and ready to learn. Other students, however, come to us worried, anxious, hungry, tired, overwhelmed and then some. For some, this is a one time, having a bad day situation. On the other hand, it is a constant state of being.
The purpose of the BEST Program is to provide a safe haven in school for all students, all the time. The ottomans will be individualized for each student and used as a tool box filled with items which will serve as a coping mechanism for students in crisis. Students will be able to access the toolboxes in times of need, to help them shape their ingrained responses to stress into more appropriate and healthy strategies. The shaving cream, lol, Slime! Many of my students love to make and play with slime, (Elmer's will help with that too). I often can hand a student on the verge of crisis some putty and the distraction is enough to help calm them down.
The "Inside Out" characters coincide with the Zones of Regulation Program we are teaching all students. The program is designed to help students self-monitor their emotions and their responses to those emotions. The characters are a perfect fit for students who do not have the language to express themselves during stressful situation.
Many of the remaining items are used in the same fashion as listed above. ANY contribution helps. Thank you so so much!
