Have you ever sat through a meeting and you find yourself wiggling, doodling, or zoning out because you have been sitting still for so long? Imagine being a young child expected to sit still for almost 6 hours a day. Now add in the fact that the students have special needs many with short attention spans. My students have asked why they have to sit in hard chairs all day. They need to move. My students beg to move.
By having wobble seats and alternate seating in the classroom, it will help my students get the 60 minutes of movement a day. My students also asked for items to use when the are feeling anxious, hyper, upset, or any other emotion. These things will help my students relax and get ready to work. My students also asked for learning materials to move while they learn. The sightword steps will be a great way to get them moving and learning, as are the sensory steps. This kid-inspired project that works to get students moving for at least 60 minutes a day would greatly impact their learning. Help them out!
