The novel will be used to teach literacy skills while also teaching students about life's decisions. Reading is a skill that is important. Many of the students are reading below grade level and dislike reading. Most of the novels that they have read in school, students have not been able to relate to.
Students will be able to relate to the characters and issues in this novel--being an immigrant, refugee, minority, living in poverty, gangs, etc. Students will reflect on the possible outcomes of their life decisions and how they affect not only them, but their families as well. Students will also learn about a culture different from their own.
