Students who have learning disabilities often have difficulty following directions on their own. Working in smalls groups tends to leave some of these students on their own to direct their learning, while the teacher instructs a different group.
The students who will use these iPads have already been identified as struggling readers and are, on average, two grade levels behind in math. The games and activities they will have access to on the iPads will allow them to be active participants in their learning, giving them time to practice skills they may have missed, and will help them continue to expand their learning. They will also feel more successful in the classroom as learners, as they will be practicing at their independent learning level.
Fourth grade can be a difficult time for some students socially, and being able to have that anonymity in their reading and math practice removes the social stigma that is sometimes placed on students with learning disabilities. Giving a small group access to iPads allows the teacher to provide appropriate instruction to all students, whether they are with the teacher in group, or working independently.
