I work in an urban school district where my students come to school everyday already having faced many challenges. It is a diverse neighborhood and school, where 72% of the students' first language was not English and 67% are considered "high needs". But these are just the numbers. My kids are so much more than just numbers. When given the opportunities, my students' abilities shine. I have watched my English Language Learners fluently discuss simple machines and identify where the "fulcrum" is on a lever. I have watched students groan loudly in disappointment after I say reading time is over. I have watched students' eyes grow wide with amazement after telling them they could actually eat the vegetables we grew in the garden. My students have shown me that they can do everything and more than what we expect of them. It is my job to provide them with the chance.
