My students will use their new thesauruses to build extensive, vibrant vocabularies. We already have lessons and projects that beg for creative word choice, and the children need this resource right at their fingertips. Thesauruses will also allow students to practice the skill of locating synonyms and antonyms in alphabetical order.
The students will gain strong vocabulary skills that make it easier for them to access new materials from all subjects. Furthermore, by increasing their vocabulary, students will improve their ability to express themselves, both verbally and in writing. Developing a rich vocabulary actually allows kids to think more deeply!
Finally, acquiring words is both exhilarating and amusing for students. Sometimes, children would rather chomp than eat or guzzle rather than drink. (Of course, others prefer to nibble and sip.) Children might remark, explain, bellow, whisper, or exclaim when they tell you this, but they will make it perfectly clear that demonstrative words are... well... FUN!
