My 32 fifth graders come from a variety of backgrounds, and in some cases are the first in their families to go to school in the states. Many of them come to school thirty to sixty minutes early and stay after school to receive extra help on their homework or be tutored on the material being presented in class. They need this extra help from me due to the fact that many of their parents speak other languages at home and have very limited English skills. In addition to the language barrier, many of my students classify for free or reduced lunch and do not always have regular classroom supplies with them. Despite these hardships, my students come to class each day enthusiastic and eager to learn. Currently, we are learning about multiplying and dividing fractions, European exploration of the United States, and how to make inferences on a provided text.
