I am fortunate to have an entire class set of Google Chromebooks in my classroom. We use different applications to enhance teaching and learning throughout the day. For instance, we use NewsELA for informational complex text. Some tools available to students on NewsELA are highlighting and annotating. In order use these tools, they must right click. However, on Chromebook the tracking pad does not have left and right buttons. Students must double tap in the middle of the pad in order for the same function to occur as right clicking. I find it easier for students to be able to right click, rather than double tap. Although this sounds like a simple difference, students accidentally click on other items, etc. when trying to double tap.
Using a mouse will be more efficient and effective . The use of a mouse will give students more control over the curser, which will allow more fluidity when playing games like Kahoot , signing into Google classroom, commenting on Padlet, responding to text and video, logging into and interacting with online textbooks, etc.
Not only will they benefit from using a mouse, they also feel more comfortable with it. They continually ask if they can borrow the mice from the classroom PCs. I believe when they feel comfortable they produce higher quality assignments!
