I have had the pleasure of working at Elm Park Community school for 14 years. Elm Park Community School is an inner city school with almost 90% free and reduced lunch. Our students receive two meals a day, a snack, and they take home a fresh fruit or vegetable everyday. Most of our student's families cannot afford to send in school supplies. We frequently tap into local resources, friends, and families when a child is in need of clothing or a family is in need of a stroller for a younger sibling. Despite their difficulties at home or in the community, our students come in eager to learn. They thrive on our structure and consistent routine.
