The Yearbook Program at our school is in its second year, offered as a high school elective to grades ten through 12 and as an after school elective to grades nine through 12. When asking the students what would change their experience the most, they say cameras. The ability to purchase high-quality cameras and editing software would allow us to serve our students by equipping them with real-world technology and journalism skills.
These camera bundles will support our program for years to come and will allow students to explore their passion for journalism and photography through a professional lens. This is a game-changing opportunity for our yearbook program. When we give them real, high-quality tools, they run with them.
Our goal is to give our kids creative problem-solving and thinking skills that are in demand in today’s job market by integrating real-life experiences and skills into our classroom work. Our curriculum is built around this goal, exposing our yearbook staffers to business, writing, journalism, digital media, graphic design, social media best practices, budgeting, and fundraising. The idea is to not only have them gain experiences they can carry with them, such as exposure to careers related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), but also to increase local community awareness.
With a very small budget and five different cameras from five different brands, we have worked to create a program that will have a lasting effect on our students. The greatest challenge we are facing as a class and a program is a lack of reliable technology. Our fundraising goal is to purchase a class set of cameras and professional editing software.
