Second graders are beginning to become independent readers. However, many struggle with both fluency and comprehension. The fluency phones are new to me. After researching these tools, I have learned how helpful they can be. The children hold them like a phone and can hear themselves read out loud and only they can hear it and repeat the story until it is fluent before moving on. We all know kids want to read quickly but sound like little robots. We want to avoid that and them to read smoothly. Books on CD are another tool for students can use to hear how fluent readers sound. We need a listening center to listen to these great books on CD.
