Wobble chairs, balance balls, and balance discs will afford my students the opportunity to learn while being active at the same time.
From a research perspective, the use of Flexible seating has shown that this tool provides for a variety of immediate benefits for all learners. Physical activity has been directly linked to better health, improved behavior, as well as higher academic performance due to the increased oxygen flow to the brain. Couple these immediate physical benefits with increased engagement and motivation and the classroom transforms to a higher functioning learning environment. Providing more than one seating option for students allows them to sharpen their critical thinking skills by engaging them in an activity that encourages them to discover how they can best stay on task and learn more efficiently from a personal perspective. Simply put, the proper use of flexible seating can directly influence the development of independent thinkers and problem-solvers.
By funding this project, you will afford me the opportunity to provide my students with a variety of flexible seating options to use throughout the day that I otherwise would not be able to do based on my school's budget restrictions. As I teach in an inclusion classroom that services students from a variety of academic performance levels, the opportunity to incorporate the additional tools outlined within this project will allow me to further diversify my teaching methods using contemporary research to engage all of my students.
