My students have been learning about their cells, genes, and nutrition. The last step in their understanding how it all fits together is through hands on experience looking at a heart. My students have learned how lifestyle choices can have epigenetic impacts, and even nutrition can affect their performance day to day. Nothing puts these lessons more in perspective than seeing hands on what an animal heart looks like.
By dissecting these hearts they will see how every valve is well engineered to keep them alive but they will also see how fragile our system is if it is not well taken care of. My students will work in groups of 3 as they have their first experience seeing an animal heart. They will use the provided handbook along with my instruction to learn how this heart is very similar to theirs. All of this to continue their appreciation for science.
