Some of the desks in my classroom are horrible. School is meant to be a place of collaboration, a place to exchange and play with ideas. In my classroom, students are expected to work together and learn from each other. Yet they are hindered by ridiculously heavy and odd-shaped tables that prevent them from engaging with each other. Every time they are asked to help move these horrible tables and chairs, they complain that there is no right way to do it because the space doesn't fit, they are too heavy, and they waste 15 minutes just trying to get focused again!
Collaboration and discussion is critical in my classroom, as I believe learning is a product of engaging with a community. Students spend their time grappling with difficult texts. Not being able to push their desks together and get head to head with their group-mates really makes it hard to fully connect with the ideas and perspectives of other students - VITAL to the academically rigorous discussions and activities in our class!
This project is the final step in making my classroom match physically what we do intellectually. These four tables and eight chairs will allow 8 of my 30+ students to have a seat in a comfortable chair at a partner table that can be pushed together with another to make a group table. Your support of this project will leave us with a room filled with collaborative seating, and every student will be able to comfortably exchange ideas about the topics of the day!
As this is my first project, I have more students than ever, and I can't afford to pay any more on my own for necessary equipment, we all would very much appreciate your help. It means the world to us!
