I am always looking for ways to make my classroom centered around my students. The classroom set up has a lot to do with student learning. So far, I have traded in traditional desks for tables, started using lamps rather than harsh florescent lights, and added a few comfortable seating options. This has made my students excited to come into class, it has reduced headaches, and has helped them take ownership of their learning.
The type of students we have today have changed, so we must change our classrooms to meet their needs. These small changes will help students to focus, stop constant moving, and to be more successful learners. By adding the busy bands and stability cushions to the tables, students will be able to move and not worry about swinging their feet and kicking another student. The bed risers will make a tall table so the students can stand instead of sitting. Many of my students prefer to stand while working. They still produce good work so I do not mind them standing. The clipboards will be an excellent addition because we do a lot of group work on the rug. The ten drawer cabinets will store their social studies and science notebooks. The cabinet lights will help add more light to our classroom so that we do not have to use the florescent lights.
