Students these days are very visual; I have found that projecting materials is extremely effective for student engagement. After attending a Reading Apprenticeship training, I learned a plethora of strategies for making learning and thinking VISIBLE to students. When students can SEE a teacher annotate/"talk to" a text while modeling metacognitive conversations, they are better able to internalize important literacy strategies that will assist them through high school and beyond.
In order to bring these metacognitive reading strategies into my classroom, I truly need a document camera and a stand for student presentations! My goal is to help my students learn how and why they think about texts, and to identify strategies that will help them overcome roadblocks to learning.
