The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of the STEM and Computer Science initiatives, oyster restoration, clean water sustainability and biodiversity of NY Harbor.
PS 21 students will conduct monthly STEM trips to monitor oysters and collect scientific data on water quality, oyster growth, and biodiversity. The data will be sent to the NY Harbor Foundation. The bigger the oysters, the cleaner the water around the oysters are getting.
After conducting at least six months of field data collection, observations and inferences, Billion Oyster Project students are encouraged to carry out their own applied research projects and share their results with the wider BOP community of scientists, STEM professionals, and volunteers at an Annual STEM Symposium. PS 21 students will record their experiences with the Virtual Reality Gear and stitch together hours of recording to produce a VR experience to be share with our school community and the community at the Annual STEM Symposium,
At the Annual STEM Symposium our PS 21 students will show the community a STEM research virtual reality learning experience that educates other community members about clean water sustainability that can be accessed anywhere in the world. Our goal is to donate the VR experience to the Billion Oyster Project, hoping to help their mission of restoring NY Harbor's marine ecosystem’s natural mechanisms for cleaner water and marine greater biodiversity by creating an interactive educational experience.
