For the first time, our classroom is going Chrome! Our district just purchased a Chromebook for every 5th grader to use in class. All my students will learn to type this year and will leave with a vital skill for the day they enter the workforce! My student's daily warm-ups and assessments will be online. I will be able to embed videos into the questions my students answer and use forms that grade their assignments in real time and link to an explanation of why answers were right or wrong the moment a student responds! Using tools like Khan Academy and our textbook's online components, students will be able to move at their own pace when they finish our whole class assignments. I need a pair of headphones for each student (for hygiene) in all three of my science and social studies sections (plus some extras for new kids and inevitable replacements) to make sure everyone can hear his or her own computer.
Some of my students are still learning English and some struggle with reading. For these students, the text to speech or text to translate tools on the Chromebook will be essential for assessing my instruction. Headphones will make using these tools daily practical.
While technology will be a vital and powerful part of our class, it isn't the only tool we'll use. These composition books will become customized interactive notebooks. My students will record their hands on science experiences inside. They will hold maps and creative diary entries students imagine and compose from the perspective of a historical figure in social studies. They will become study guides, and resources each student can proudly keep and use in years to come. By funding this project, you are helping 78 plus individuals become 21st century problem solvers!
