Studies indicate that the language skills English language learners need to be academically successful take years to acquire. To develop these language skills, explicit vocabulary instruction and building background knowledge are vital.
Scholastic News will enhance my ability to develop vocabulary and the background knowledge of my students. The online videos Scholastic News provides are a great resource for building background knowledge on the contents of the news magazine. The online component also offers a section that focuses on the vocabulary the students will encounter in their reading. A definition of each word is provided. There is an audio feature. So, if the students can't read the vocabulary word or it's definition, they can have both read to them. A picture to illustrate the word is also provided. Pictures greatly enhance understanding of the word.
Scholastic News and it's on line features are very motivating. The students love it. For the past three years I have paid for my classroom subscription. My budget is very tight this year and I am unable to provide this wonderful resource for my students. I hope my students won't miss out on the many learning opportunities Scholastic News offers because I am unable to provide it.
