My students struggle with fluency and reading with expression, and are thus insecure about reading out loud. It would be extremely powerful for them to be able to record themselves reading a text, then listen to the recording in a safe, private spot in the room.
It will allow them to truly be reflective in their learning and growth, and it would allow them to compare their reading at the beginning of the year to their reading later in the year. I can give them feedback, but it's so much more powerful when the reflection and feedback comes from themselves. Middle school is a time of high emotions and low self-esteem, especially for students with learning disabilities. Having tablets and headphones will allow the students a more private avenue for practicing reading out loud.
