Students coming to school need to be in a mindset to be ready to learn. Some students need extra time during the day to calm down and build skills to get back in the mind frame to continue to learn. Students are needing to build these skills that weren't developed during distant learning due to Covid-19. At our school, staff have had quality professional development to be trauma informed and how to help students build skills to work through trauma. Learning to calm down to get out of flight or fight mode is a skill students are learning. Developing a room that is a place to calm down and then get back to work is a goal for our school. Providing a couch and lamp will help build this concept for our school.
