A boom box with only a cassette-tape and CD player no longer meets the needs of my classroom and is in need of a serious upgrade. Not only are my class sizes larger (more overall noise to overcome) but technology has changed drastically. I still need the CD player in order to project the testing cadences. I also have a couple of "oldie but goodie" cassettes. However, with online, digital and wireless technology I now can create the latest playlists for warm-ups, workouts, circuits, and cool downs.
Allowing students to create personal, cultural, school appropriate playlist develops a sense of ownership within the classroom. This sound systems gives students the freedom to express themselves through a variety of ways. Our international students can feel more at home showcasing music from their country. Instead of students feeling they are in my class, I want them to feel that I'm a part of their class.
