While analyzing the unit "Cultural Perspectives" students will analyze various themes and major events in history while studying The Secret Life of Bees. Most students read To Kill a Mockingbird, however, not much research goes beyond the themes from that novel. "Bees" focuses on a young white girl and the rich experiences she undertakes while searching to figure herself out.
The students in my class are young teens trying to figure themselves out. While the story is placed in times of The Civil Rights Act and various important times in history, students relate to the novel because it is written in plain text and there is no confusion as to what characters are experiencing.
