To get students motivated to read, comfortable independent reading is a part of our daily classroom routine. Allowing kids to lounge as they read mimics the reading habits they should be building in their home as well as in school. Because lice outbreaks are a reality teachers must deal with, fabric pillows and cushions are not a good option. I am asking for vinyl beanbag chairs so that my student can read comfortably to themselves each and every day in my class.
Traditional wooden chairs and desk are not the optimal seating option for independent reading. As adults, where do we often read in our homes? Perhaps a recliner, couch, or in bed? Hard desks and chairs are not likely spots to choose when settling into a good book. Children need comfortable seating to enjoy reading just as we do. To help students read independently for at least twenty minutes, their comfort is vital.
