Alternative seating is a new research based practice that is proven to increase students' time on task by allowing students to move. According to Matthew T. Mahar, "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." Flexible seating for all, allows students to disperse extra energy while focusing on the task at hand.
My project will make a difference in the on-task behaviors of my students by allowing them to wiggle while they work. Alternative seating options allow students to choose the seating option that works best for them. Wiggle stools and yoga balls allow students to wiggle at their desks while developing core muscles. Students will be engaged in academics and physical activities without distracting others. Floor cushions and lap desks allow students to sit on the floor and find a comfortable spot to learn. I want my classroom environment to be positive, encouraging, and most of all, focused.
