One of the areas that my students struggle the most in is reading. Many of our students face the difficulty of learning the English language while trying to learn to read at the same time. Advancing the reading levels of our students is one of the main goals of our school this year through literature circles and promoting student choice in reading.
What would really benefit my students is a variety of seating options that provide a comfortable place to read and learn. The students would benefit, not only from the choice of books, but also from a choice of seating so that they can feel more comfortable in school. Standard desks do not give students the option to move and have limited space. Having a warm and inviting place to read would really help to promote a positive reading experience and create lifelong readers. Scientific studies have also shown that being comfortable promotes learning, productivity, and creativity.
In today's world, reading abilities correlate with academic success. Students with higher reading levels perform better on standardized tests, have higher GPAs, are better prepared for postsecondary education, and have higher paying jobs. It is essential that we help them to develop these skills, and having more options for comfortable seating will help them to achieve more, both in school and throughout their lives.
