Welcome to my Music Room! I teach in a K-6 building in an urban district! While many of my students are African-American, we have a large population of Spanish-speaking students, so we are a bilingual building. Which means, the struggle I had when choosing between Music Education and Spanish Education in college is a moot point-I get to do both!
The music program in my building was virtually nonexistent before I was hired (not one teacher elected to stay more than a year in at least the 15 years prior to my arrival, and many others only stayed two before transferring). We have a limited number of resources because of this, but slowly, I have been able to take students to visit our local professional orchestra, sing with that orchestra, and this past year had a large number of students get accepted into the Arts High School in our District.
While a lot has been done, we still have a long way to go!!!
