My students and I are striving to participate in the Global Read Aloud from October 03, 2016-November 11, 2016. Through this activity, children from around the world read the same book (The BFG), participate in Skype sessions discussing the book and reading to one another, blog about their thoughts and questions concerning the book they are reading, and relate this common book to other books that they have read in the past or want to read in the future. The connectedness that this program makes supports students working together to help one another. An example of this would be a penny drive that several schools and students from around the world organized in order to donate money to the Atlanta Zoo in honor of Ivan after reading The One and Only Ivan. Another example would be students coming together to purchase and donate books to a newly built library in Guatemala where community, town, and school libraries did not exist and students often do not attend school past the sixth grade.
