Sitting at a desk for 80 minutes is difficult for any student. Sitting at a desk when you are urged to move? Nearly impossible. Many of our students have sensory motor impairments which inhibits their ability to move freely, sit for long periods of time, or sit at a desk. Providing students with moderate/severe disabilities with alternate forms of seating gives them an opportunity to work in an environment that accommodates their needs as a learner. Students sitting in a balance ball chair will experience higher levels of engagement being able to move. A rocking chair benefits students need for constant movement. Moveable wobbly stools gives students the space and freedom to move their bodies while learning. Standing laptop desks provides an alternate means of workspace for students.
Creating an environment in our math classroom where students feel safe and at ease is the purpose of my project. Math class is scary. Students come in with so many anxieties and fears that have accumulated over the years. I want students to be able to work freely at a desk, on the ground, or sitting in a balance chair. I want to provide the best environment for my kids because they deserve it.
