Students in 4th and 5th grades need microscopes to help become better observers. They will use them to identify various microscopic organisms we find in our salt water fish tanks, as well as observing and drawing fish scales when they dissect fish. Using microscopes in elementary school is a springboard for students for when they get to middle and high school. It will give them experiences that will be necessary for success.
Without the use of microscopes they would never have to chance to observe these organisms. This also allows them to construct arguments based on evidence from their observations. This is now an essential element of the NGSS/NVACSS. (Next Generation Science Standards and Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science).
